Over 12 months we will train and develop 10 LGBTIQA+ leaders drawing on GV Pride members, volunteers and board so as to directly benefit GV Pride Inc. and Greater Shepparton’s LGBTIQA+ community organisations and the region. We will host a leadership/development weekend including mentoring, guest speakers; alongside sessions every 6-8 weeks throughout the year.

For 13 years GV Pride has operated as a small community organisation out of people’s homes. Individuals on the committee and our volunteers are everyday LGBTIQA+ people living in regional/rural areas where access to employment/education opportunities is limited. There is plenty of good will found in local LGBTIQA+ people keen to join the GV Pride committee and offer their time, passion and voice to important issues, but in many cases the period of time spent on the committee is short-lived due to volunteer capacity/capability and burnout.

GV Pride lack formal debrief/supervision mechanisms being a small charity, and rely heavily on volunteers for support and other mentoring needs. Leadership and capability are significant gaps for GV Pride committee and volunteers and we want to work with others to develop and strengthen our community leadership potential.

GV Pride do not have a regular office/formal gathering space for trainings or committee meetings nor the basic IT or office equipment to successfully support individuals to achieve their goals.

We are active on social media and have a website and mailing lists but these lack a professional edge and qualified volunteers to be able to drive and manage the database and communications/marketing/engagement with LGBTIQA+ community members and our stakeholders.

We want to support, encourage and motivate others. We have experienced individuals with a willingness to share knowledge. Key individuals and organisations in our community possess good interpersonal communication skills and are able to commit time to mentor/coach our 10 applicants.

Several leaders are capable of developing partnerships and acting as positive role models for our upcoming leaders. We want to harness these qualities and fill some of the gaps our committee members/volunteers need addressed.

The provision of regular training/resources and a retreat dedicated to the development of these individuals will be key to their future leadership potential, growth and success.

We will seek applications from individuals from varying backgrounds, experience/s, gender and age that are community volunteers, members of community groups and organisations, members of Community Plan Steering Committees, individuals who are prepared and able to commit the time and energy necessary to complete the program.

10 leaders will emerge at the end of the retreat/leadership training sessions and we will map their paths to success. We aim to see 10 LGBTIQA+ community members report back on their personal/professional growth and for it to be closely followed up with taking on roles in leadership and managing various projects, events and community initiatives. Pre- and post-leadership course surveys and skills-gap and needs analysis tools will be used to capture qualitative/quantitive data, as will case studies and commentary/feedback.

GV Pride will have a full committee of 10 LGBTIQA+ community members. We will recommend and refer graduates into further study at GOTAFE and other education options inc. local scholarships and Fairley Leadership Academy programs.

Individuals will be recruited/employed by many of the Alliance partners listed above, in roles of influence and leadership, further building the capacity of organisations to better support and focus on the needs and inclusion for LGBTIQA+ people in our community.
