On the 30th of August 2024, ‘Wear It Purple Day’ will unite LGBTIQA+ young people and allies to shine a light on creating brave and inclusive spaces for LGBTIQA+ young people. Wear a touch of purple or rainbow, grab your teammates, colleagues, community groups and friends, and join in on the conversation.

Access key information:

  • The Common Ground Café is onsite within the Fryers Street Complex at GOTAFE Shepparton. There are entry points from outside, closest to Fryers Street and inside, near reception when you enter the front entry point, along the main path into the campus, turn left as you enter, and the café is the space in front of you. If you are facing the campus from Fryers Street, the café is to the left of the campus.
  • There are local town buses that drop off outside of GOTAFE. See bus routes 2,3 & 7 Fryers St/Corio St – Public Transport Victoria (ptv.vic.gov.au) for further information.
  • Paid street parking outside of GOTAFE along Fryers Street is available. Free all day parking is available within an 8 minute walk of the campus. Please see here Parking Map – Greater Shepparton City Council. There is also one accessible parking space out the front of the GOTAFE Shepparton campus.
  • The café is located on the ground floor of the GOATFE campus and has level flooring and wide doorways.
  • There are all gender and all accessible bathrooms within café space on the ground floor.
  • There will be some tables and chairs inside of and outside of the café space. Inside there will be tables with information and activities, tables with free food, some speakers and a microphone set up in one area of the space and a chill room with bean bags onsite.
  • A quiet/chill zone room is within the café but has a door that can be closed. The door is glass. Inside this room will be some tables and chairs and bean bags.
  • There may be up to 70-100 people, and this may limit the amount of space there is to move around within the café space. People of all ages and diverse experiences may be present.
  • The café has lots of glass windows and doors and general overhead lighting that will be on. There will be no flashing lights.
  • There will be some decorations hung on walls within the space, these will not limit the floor space.

Social Script:

  • Bring along items that you might need to feel more comfortable. This might be fidget items, headphones, a drink bottle, a snack to eat. You don’t have to bring anything, but you can bring items if you would like to.
  • The event will have people from organisations and workplaces, many who work with young people, and staff and students from GOTAFE, possibly students from some Secondary Schools around Greater Shepparton. There will be LGBTIQA+ people at the event.
  • There will be excitement, celebration, happiness, and overall, the vibe will be high energy through the event. The purpose of this event is to bring people together to enjoy activities and celebrate queer young people.
  • There will be performers singing music and playing instruments, and people may clap and cheer to show their thanks after they perform different songs.
  • There will be a panel of young people sharing their stories, when they are speaking others may listen quietly.
  • People will be taking photos of themselves and others on phones or cameras, or the photobooth at this event.
  • The event runs for 2 hours. People may stay for the whole 2 hours, or less. There may be times when there are more or less people at the event.
  • You will have the option to engage in numerous hands-on activities provided by different organisations.
  • You will be able to collect and eat food at this event that will be free.
  • You will be able to go into a chill space, which is in a smaller room within the café space.
